Jesus Wept

His voice trembles with emotion, tears swell in His eyes. Standing beyond the tomb, Christ commands, “Lazarus come forth!” (John 11:43). 

Just as Christ wept with Mary and Martha, He enters entirely into our deepest pain and weeps with us in our deepest despair. Yet, because He has triumphed over all things, He will command the return of life and joy, and will forsake lasting sorrow forever.

Christ gives us permission to grieve with hope; His example teaches that deep grief is not a sign of weak faith. You can both believe in the Resurrection and weep at the graveside. This balances the "hope in Christ" for the resurrection with the very real pain of separation that springs from deep love.

Even God Himself weeps in Gethsemane. Christ cries out on the cross before declaring, "It is finished," and finally rises from His own tomb with "all power... in heaven and in earth" (Matthew 28:18).
