Consider The Lilies of The Field

As a recently engaged young man, I felt a tremendous weight fall on my shoulders with the sole responsibility to provide for my soon-to-be wife and the children we planned to have.

This was no light matter to me. I  gave the question of how to provide for my family serious contemplation and came up empty. At this time I had already graduated from a culinary arts school but did not feel that this would be a lasting career for me.

I turned to the scriptures, and the pages fell open to Luke, chapter 12. My eyes immediately focused on verse 27: “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” As I read these words I felt a gentle prompting from the Lord that I did not need to worry about money and that He would help me  provide for my family.

What a tender mercy from God!

Yet, at the time I was impatient, I became annoyed and frustrated with the insight I received . . . I wanted a specific answer to my prayers that told me exactly what I should do.

At first  I used my culinary education and work as a sous chef. I soon became a photographer, a security guard, a foreman for a construction company, a server, and an active duty oral surgery technician in the United States Airforce.

I returned to school, received a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, and ran a local TV station. I then continued my schooling to receive a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences. I went on to work as a videographer, a writer, a designer, a director, a marketer, a creative director, an executive creative director, and then a Vice President of Marketing, all the while working several side hustles in between each job to provide for my family.

In retrospect, I see the wisdom of a loving Father in Heaven to not lay out specifically how I would provide for my family.

The principle He taught me all those years ago is still true. It is something I am striving to be . . . a man who trusts God with all his heart.

"Consider The Lilies of The Field" is a reminder to trust the Lord in all things. Luke 12: 27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

A good friend used to tell me: "If you worry, why pray? And if you pray, why worry?"
