I Have Borne Your Burden

Several years ago, I left a lucrative executive position at a Fortune 100 company to build a business with a new partner. I took a significant pay cut for the promise of ownership, believing the risk was worthwhile. However, while dropping my daughter off at college, I discovered that I had been locked out of all business accounts. My partner cut off all communication and the career I had sacrificed for vanished instantly.

The following months were extremely difficult. I began selling the assets I had in order to pay the bills. The threat of losing our home and every material possession our family owned constantly loomed in my mind.

Christmas was coming, and for the first time I was dreading it. Christmas meant spending money-- money I did not have. 

I was too prideful to let those around me know of my dire situation. I wanted to keep up the appearance that everything was fine. So not giving Christmas gifts because of limited finances was not on the table. 

Then an idea for the perfect Christmas gift that I could give came to me. “Paint Him.” I immediately went to work on creating a portrait of Christ. I felt led and guided. As I was finishing the portrait, the title of the artwork instantly entered my mind: “I Have Borne Your Burden.”

Tears filled my eyes. I had been stressed out of my mind, attempting to shoulder the entirety of my financial woes. Christ was always there, standing ready to bear my burden.

In my foolish attempt to protect my ego, God helped me create a gift that represents what the Christmas season is truly about--His atoning sacrifice. My financial concerns did not disappear, nor have they since. However, in the years that have passed, I have relied more heavily on my Savior and He has absolutely borne my burden.
